How We Score: Methodology

What our scores mean

Fragranote Team publishes research-based catalogue guidance, not laboratory measurements or a claim to have worn every fragrance. The existing catalogue contains estimates and generated descriptions; not every record has a documented primary-source trail. Newly source-checked guides cite the material reviewed and label interpretation separately.

Performance and overall score

Longevity, sillage, versatility and value are stored as comparative scores from 1 to 10. Duration bands are estimates associated with those scores, not recorded hours from a stopwatch test. Zero or absent values mean unrated and are excluded from averages.

The climate average is the mean of the available five climate-zone scores, rounded to one decimal. The overall score is the mean of longevity, sillage, versatility, value and that climate average, rounded once to one decimal. The climate average is not converted to an integer first. These formulas describe how the display is calculated; they do not validate the underlying estimates.

Climate guidance

Extreme heat, hot and humid, warm and dry, mild, and cold are rated separately. The climate tool filters on the selected zone’s score, not the five-zone average. City shortcuts are broad presets, not weather forecasts; choose the zone matching your actual conditions. No zone score guarantees comfort, projection or wear duration.

Similarity

The comparison score combines note overlap weighted by rarity (62%), accord overlap (28%), shared brand (6%) and shared gender classification (4%). Gender is a marketing category, not a restriction on who can wear a fragrance. Similarity is catalogue overlap, not a measured smell match or proof of shared formulas. Legacy clone entries may use separately stored estimates and should not be treated as validated equivalents.

Prices

Prices are indicative ranges, not live inventory or purchase offers. Some currencies are converted from stored USD prices, falling back to PKR where necessary. Exchange rates are cached, so conversions can lag market changes. Compare the same concentration and bottle size, and verify the retailer’s current price before buying.

Indexing and data completeness

Our automatic completeness check looks for data in five groups: notes, performance, climate, prices and accords. It currently requires some data in each group, not every field in every group. Sparse taxonomy archives are also marked noindex. Passing this check does not guarantee accuracy, originality or inclusion in Google’s index; it is a minimum technical check, not a quality certification.

Sources, dates and corrections

A source-check date applies to the facts described in that update. Manufacturer statements are attributed, not presented as independent proof. We do not publish a hands-on test label without a documented test. Use Contact to report errors; include the fragrance edition, page URL and supporting source. Editorial responsibility rests with the site owner publishing as Fragranote Team.
