The short answer

  • Longest-lasting overall: Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540, rated 10/10 for longevity in our database.
  • Best value: Lancôme La Vie Est Belle and Mugler Alien, both rated 9/10 at a designer price.
  • Best in hot weather: Parfums de Marly Delina, which pairs 12-hour-plus longevity with 7/10 in hot, humid climates, the best heat scores of any fragrance in our 12-hour band.
  • What makes a perfume last: a heavy base of vanilla, amber, musk, patchouli or resins, a higher concentration, and skin that is moisturised before you spray.

A long-lasting perfume is one you can still smell on your skin eight to twelve hours after you spray it. Very few fragrances manage that, and the ones that do have something in common: they are built on rich vanilla, amber, patchouli and musk bases rather than on bright citrus or watery notes that evaporate within the hour.

Below are the twelve women’s fragrances that score highest for longevity in the Fragranote database, chosen so that every major scent family and budget is covered. Each card shows our live longevity, projection and climate scores, plus the current price in your currency.

How we chose these perfumes

We started with the more than 1,800 women’s and unisex fragrances in our database that are rated 8/10 or higher for longevity. A 9 or 10 corresponds to our 12-hours-plus band; an 8 means roughly 8 to 12 hours on skin. From that pool we kept fragrances that are widely sold, that represent a different scent family or price point, and that you can realistically buy as a full bottle.

Every fragrance also carries a score for five climate zones, from extreme heat to cold, because the same perfume behaves very differently in Dubai in August and London in January. Our scores are research-based estimates rather than laboratory measurements; our methodology explains how they are built.

Notes Saffron, Jasmine · Amberwood, Ambergris · Fir Resin, Cedar

Francis Kurkdjian created Baccarat Rouge 540 in 2014 for the 250th anniversary of the Baccarat crystal house, and it became the most imitated fragrance of the past decade. The structure is simple: saffron and jasmine over a large dose of amberwood and ambergris accords, finished with fir resin and cedar. Those ambery woody materials are some of the most tenacious in modern perfumery, which is why it is famous for clinging to scarves and coats long after it fades from skin.

Wear it if you want a signature scent that people notice and remember. Skip it if you live somewhere very hot: it scores only 3/10 in extreme heat, where the sweetness can turn sharp. It is marketed as unisex and priced as niche. For the airy-sweet effect for far less, see Fragrance World Barakkat Rouge 540 Extrait, which follows the extrait version.

Notes Cotton Candy, Helional, Bergamot · Honey, Red Berries, Caramel · Patchouli, Chocolate, Vanilla

Angel, launched in 1992, is widely credited as the fragrance that created the modern gourmand category: cotton candy, honey, caramel and red berries poured over a heavy base of patchouli, chocolate, vanilla and tonka bean. The patchouli is what keeps it going. It is one of only two fragrances on this list rated 10/10 for longevity.

Wear it in cold weather and in the evening, and use one or two sprays at most. Skip it for the office or a warm climate: its versatility score of 4/10 is the lowest here, and it rates 2/10 in heat.

Notes Rose, Clove, Raspberry · Patchouli, Incense, Sandalwood · Musk, Benzoin, Amber

Dominique Ropion’s Portrait of a Lady (2010) is a dark, spiced rose with raspberry, black currant, clove and cinnamon, set on patchouli, incense and sandalwood, then benzoin, amber and musk. Rose on its own fades quickly; wrapped in resins and patchouli like this, it lasts well into the next day.

Wear it for formal evenings and autumn or winter. Skip it if you prefer a fresh, dewy rose; this one is opulent. If the price is the obstacle, the card links to the closest cheaper alternatives in our database.

Notes Truffle, Gardenia, Black Currant · Orchid, Spices, Gardenia · Mexican Chocolate, Patchouli, Vanilla

Tom Ford’s 2006 debut fragrance opens with truffle, black currant, gardenia and ylang-ylang, then settles into a dark base of chocolate, patchouli, vanilla, incense and vetiver. It was launched for women and is now worn by everyone. The earthy, slightly boozy depth is what gives it both its projection and its staying power, rated 9/10 for each.

Wear it to dinners, events and anywhere that suits a statement. Skip it in daytime heat: it drops to 2/10 in extreme heat.

Notes Jasmine Sambac · Cashmeran · Amber

Alien is almost a three-note fragrance: jasmine sambac, cashmeran and a woody amber. That minimalism is the point. Cashmeran is a soft, musky-woody molecule that clings for hours, and here it holds a radiant white floral close to the skin all day. It is rated 9/10 for longevity and projection and 8/10 for value, at a designer price.

Wear it when you want a strong scent at a designer price. Skip it in small offices: two sprays fill a room. For even more strength, Mugler Alien ExtraIntense scores 10/10 for both longevity and sillage.

Notes Black Currant, Pear · Iris, Jasmine, Orange Blossom · Praline, Vanilla, Patchouli

La Vie Est Belle (2012) pairs pear and black currant with iris, jasmine and orange blossom, over a base of praline, vanilla, patchouli and tonka bean. Its success set off a decade of sweet, powerful women’s fragrances. It is rated 9/10 for longevity and 7/10 for versatility, so it works for daytime as well as evenings.

Wear it if you want one long-lasting bottle that most people like. Skip it if you dislike sweet scents; the praline is front and centre.

Notes litchi, rhubarb, bergamot · turkish rose, peony, musk · cashmeran, incense, cedar

Most long-lasting perfumes are heavy, and heavy perfumes struggle in heat. Delina (2017, by Quentin Bisch) is the exception. Lychee, rhubarb and bergamot lift a Turkish rose and peony heart, while musk, cashmeran, incense, cedar and vetiver anchor it for 12 hours or more. It scores 6/10 in extreme heat and 7/10 in hot, humid climates. Only Coco Mademoiselle matches that here, and Delina lasts longer.

Wear it year-round, including summer days. Skip it if pink, fruity florals are not your style. Popular cheaper alternatives are listed on its profile.

Notes Orange, Mandarin Orange, Bergamot · Turkish Rose, Jasmine, Mimosa · Patchouli, White Musk, Vanilla

Jacques Polge’s Coco Mademoiselle (2001) is a modern chypre: orange, mandarin and bergamot over rose and jasmine, with a base of patchouli, white musk, vanilla, vetiver and opoponax. Citrus openings usually fade fast, but the patchouli-musk base keeps this one going for a full working day. It is rated 9/10 for versatility, the highest on this list.

Wear it anywhere, from meetings to dinner. Skip it if you want maximum longevity above all: it rates 8/10, so expect 8 to 12 hours rather than a next-day trail.

Notes ginger, saffron, mandarin orange · orange blossom, lavender · bourbon vanilla, honey, tonka bean

Libre Le Parfum (2022) is the richest version of YSL’s lavender-and-orange-blossom Libre. Ginger and saffron sit on top, and the base adds bourbon vanilla, honey and tonka bean. The higher parfum concentration lifts it to 9/10 for longevity, a step up from the original eau de parfum.

Wear it for evenings and cooler months. Skip it if lavender reads as too sharp to you.

Notes citruses, bergamot, lemon · iris, patchouli, vetiver · vanilla, incense, leather

Jacques Guerlain’s Shalimar, first released in 1925, is the blueprint for the amber, or oriental, fragrance family. A bergamot opening gives way to iris, jasmine and rose, then to a base of vanilla, incense, leather, opoponax, tonka bean, sandalwood and a touch of civet. Like most classics it has been reformulated over the decades to meet IFRA safety standards, but the eau de parfum still rates 9/10 for longevity and 9/10 for value.

Wear it in cold weather and for formal occasions. Skip it in heat (1/10 in extreme heat) or if powdery, animalic scents feel old-fashioned to you.

Notes neroli, bergamot, pink pepper · orange blossom, honeysuckle, jasmine · sugar, vanilla, caramel

Calice Becker’s Love, Don’t Be Shy (2007) turns orange blossom into something close to marshmallow: neroli and pink pepper up top, orange blossom, honeysuckle and jasmine in the heart, then sugar, caramel, vanilla, musk and labdanum. The labdanum and musk give a sweet floral far more staying power than florals usually have.

Wear it for dates and special occasions. Skip it if you are on a budget; it sits in the same niche price bracket as Delina, Portrait of a Lady and Baccarat Rouge 540.

Notes lavender, pear, bergamot · whipped cream, coconut, praline · musk, woody notes

Ariana Grande Cloud (2018) is often compared to Baccarat Rouge 540 for its airy sweetness, at a fraction of the price. Lavender, pear and bergamot open onto whipped cream, coconut and praline, with musk and woods underneath. It is rated 8/10 for both longevity and projection, which is rare at this price.

Wear it every day in cooler weather. Skip it in extreme heat, where it rates 3/10.

What makes a perfume last longer?

Four things decide how long a fragrance stays on you: its concentration, the materials in its base, your skin and the air around you. The label on the bottle is only the first of these.

Concentration

Concentration is the share of perfume oil in the alcohol. Brands do not publish exact figures, but the industry ranges below are a reliable guide.

TypeTypical perfume oilTypical wear on skin
Extrait de parfum / parfum20–30%+8–12 hours or more
Eau de parfum (EDP)15–20%6–8 hours, longer with a heavy base
Eau de toilette (EDT)5–15%3–5 hours
Eau de cologne (EDC)2–4%About 2 hours
Body mist1–3%1–2 hours

Formula matters more than the label. A heavy amber eau de toilette can outlast a citrus eau de parfum, and several picks above are eaux de parfum that reach our 12-hour band because of what is in their base.

Base notes and fixatives

Every perfume unfolds in three stages. Top notes such as bergamot and other citrus are the most volatile and are largely gone within the first hour. Heart notes, usually florals and spices, carry the next few hours. Base notes are the heaviest molecules and do the long haul. The ingredients that last longest are:

Modern molecules

Much of the staying power in modern perfume comes from synthetic materials designed to last. Ambroxan gives a warm, mineral amber that can linger for days on fabric, Iso E Super adds a velvety cedar glow, and cashmeran supplies the soft musky woods behind Alien and Delina. When a fresh-smelling fragrance lasts unusually long, molecules like these are usually the reason.

Your skin

Fragrance evaporates fastest from dry skin, because there is nothing for the aromatic molecules to bind to. Skin with more natural oil, or skin with a layer of unscented moisturiser, holds a scent noticeably longer. Skin temperature and chemistry also change how a perfume develops, which is why the same fragrance can last all day on one person and fade by lunch on another.

Climate

Heat speeds up evaporation. In a hot climate a perfume projects harder in the first hour and then burns off faster, and dense, sweet scents can turn cloying. Cold does the opposite: projection is quieter, but the scent sits on the skin for longer. That is why most fragrances in this guide score 9 or 10 in cold weather and 3 or below in extreme heat. If you live in the Gulf, South Asia or anywhere with long summers, Delina and Coco Mademoiselle are the safest choices on this list.

Some scent families last longer than others by nature. If you already know the family you love, start here.

How to make your perfume last longer

Even a long-lasting perfume wears better with the right application. These steps work for any fragrance, and our full guide on how to make perfume last longer goes into more detail:

  1. Moisturise first. Apply an unscented lotion, or a fragrance-free balm, where you plan to spray. Hydrated skin holds fragrance far longer than dry skin.
  2. Spray after a shower. Warm, clean, freshly moisturised skin is the best base.
  3. Use pulse points. Spray the neck, behind the ears, the inner wrists and the inner elbows, where warmth helps the scent radiate.
  4. Do not rub your wrists together. Friction warms the skin and flattens the top notes. Let the perfume dry on its own.
  5. Spray your clothes too. Fabric holds fragrance much longer than skin. Test on an inside seam first, and avoid silk and light colours, which can stain.
  6. Layer the same scent. A matching shower gel or body cream from the same line gives the perfume more to cling to.
  7. Store it well. Heat, light and air break perfume down. Keep bottles capped, in their box, in a cool cupboard rather than a steamy bathroom or a hot car.
  8. Carry a travel atomiser for a top-up in the evening instead of overspraying in the morning.

Still there, even if you can’t smell it Your nose stops registering a constant smell within minutes to hours, a process called olfactory adaptation. A 2017 review in the journal Physiology & Behavior describes how quickly it sets in. It is why many people reapply a perfume that others can still smell clearly. Ask someone close to you, or smell a sprayed scarf, before you reach for the bottle again.

Cheaper alternatives that still last

Longevity does not have to be expensive. Many of the best-performing fragrances in our database are inspired by the niche picks above and cost a fraction of the price. Barakkat Rouge 540 Extrait is rated 9/10 for longevity and 10/10 for value, and the pick cards above link straight to the matched alternatives for each fragrance. Similarity is based on shared notes and accords, so treat an alternative as a close cousin rather than an identical copy.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best long-lasting perfume for women?

In our database, Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540 and Mugler Angel score highest for longevity at 10/10, followed by Portrait of a Lady, Tom Ford Black Orchid, Mugler Alien and La Vie Est Belle at 9/10. For one all-rounder at a sensible price, La Vie Est Belle is the safest choice. For more styles, see our guide to the best perfumes for women.

Which perfume lasts 24 hours?

No perfume reliably lasts a full 24 hours on skin. The most tenacious extraits and amber, oud or patchouli fragrances can still be faintly noticeable the next morning, and on clothing their base notes can linger for days. On skin, plan on 8 to 12 hours from the strongest fragrances, with only a faint trace after that.

What is the strongest, most long-lasting perfume?

The strongest perfumes combine a high concentration with a heavy base. In our database, Mugler Alien ExtraIntense and Xerjoff Erba Pura are both rated 10/10 for longevity and 10/10 for sillage. Among eaux de parfum, Baccarat Rouge 540 and Mugler Angel reach 10/10 for longevity.

What scent stays on you all day?

Scents built on base notes stay longest: vanilla, amber, musk, patchouli, sandalwood, oud and resins such as benzoin and labdanum. Gourmand and amber fragrances last the longest of any family, while citrus, aquatic and green fragrances fade the fastest because their top notes are the most volatile.

What is the number one perfume for women in the world?

There is no independent global ranking that crowns a single number one. Chanel No. 5, launched in 1921, is the most famous women’s perfume in the world. For longevity specifically, the fragrances in this guide are the highest-rated in our database.

Does skin type affect how long perfume lasts?

Yes. Fragrance fades faster on dry skin and lasts longer on skin with more natural oil. Applying an unscented moisturiser before you spray is the simplest way to make any perfume last longer on dry skin.

Does eau de parfum last longer than eau de toilette?

Usually. An eau de parfum typically contains 15 to 20% perfume oil, against 5 to 15% for an eau de toilette, so it lasts longer and smells richer. The formula still matters more than the label: a heavy amber eau de toilette can outlast a light citrus eau de parfum.

Why can’t I smell my perfume after an hour?

Because your nose has adapted to it. The brain tunes out a constant smell so it can notice new ones, so you often stop smelling your own perfume long before it has gone. Other people can usually still smell it, so check with someone else before you reapply.
